understanding your breast cancer risk
Men who carry a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation have a slightly higher risk of developing breast cancer than the general population. This risk is greater for men with a BRCA2 gene mutation.
Talk to your genetic counsellor and doctor to get the best idea of your personal risk estimate.
|Type of Cancer||General Population||brca1 mutation||brca2 mutation|
|Male Breast Cancer||Less then 1%||1.2% ||6.8% |
other cancer risks
Breast cancer is the most significant risk for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers. There may also be a slight increase of risk for other cancers such as melanoma, prostate and pancreatic cancer, particularly for BRCA2 gene mutation carriers
Your genetic counsellor can speak to you about these cancer risks.
Key points to remember
Men who carry the BRCA gene mutation have an increased risk of developing male breast cancer and prostate cancer.
All of the factors that impact risk for cancers are unknown. We do not know a man’s exact risk for developing cancer.
You should always talk with a genetic counsellor to get the most accurate estimate of your personal cancer risk.
